I thought that might be a reason why I am not hearing millions of stories about Lasik from family and friends. But, on deeper inspection I have come to the idea that it is just that it is a new thing, and the word has not spread as far, yet, as I thought.

The Lisboa Dakar Rally is no stranger to political tension and associated danger, and 2008 will be no exception. The Dakar rally’s security chief feels confident enough in the addition of 3,000 security personnel to safeguard participants and spectators that the Mauritanian stages are thus far still planned.
Although safe passage for racers and fans is expected, the current tension in Mauritania will no doubt add yet another level of intensity to a grueling race. Watching participants battle through the brutal terrain of the Sahara in the Mauritanian stages will undoubtedly be more intense than any Drift D1 Grand Prix competition or WRC Movies motor sports fans have ever seen.

The Bank of England has warned that some major banking groups could be forced to go begging to their shareholders in a bid to raise extra cash and bolster their balance sheets.
Markets director at the Bank Paul Tucker said to a conference in London that ‘some replenishment of common equity may be needed’ as massive losses continued to be revealed as a result of investments into secured loans sub-prime markets. Fund raising has already begun at Citigroup and UBS, and may more may follow.
Earlier in the week central banks from the US, the UK and Europe promised to inject $100bn into world banking systems in an effort to help banks’ cash flows, and the forecast of rights issues emphasises how badly banks are coping in the credit-squeezed markets.
The move by central banks failed to boost confidence in the City and the FTSE 100 index closed down over 195 points on Thursday at 6364.2. Some senior bankers think the move has come too late and some feels it looks a like a move of desperation; others feel more is needed.
There was a positive effect on inter-bank loan rates which fell in the US, the UK and the eurozone as rates fell, but possibly not as much as had been hoped.
Tucker said that he was deeply concerned about how the credit crunch might affect the wider economy, warning of a ‘vicious circle’ where a reduced supply of credit would lead to reducing house prices and falling markets, speeding up the possibilities of a worldwide recession. The UK is on a firm base, but he described household finances as being ‘vulnerable’ and property prices ‘stretched’, and suggested that the turmoil in the financial markets was not just a City event.
Economist James Knightley, of ING bank, warned: “We have seen only a small easing in the credit markets. It could be pretty tough out there for the UK economy next year.”
Just when it looked as though experts might be able to forecast where the housing market was heading – and popular predictions had to heading downwards in 2008 – the back end of 2007 came up with a surprise. The latest Halifax house price index for last month shows a shock increase in prices.
The cost of an average home in December went up by £2,500 to £197,000 – that’s a jump of 1.3%. This followed three months of falling prices, and left 2007 with annual house price inflation of 5.2%, the second time in seven years that the rise had been less than the long-term average of 8%.
These figures are a surprise and go against what Nationwide said in early December, which was a fall of 0.5%.
The three-month average from Halifax – probably more reliable as it allows for monthly peaks and troughs – showed a dip in house prices of 0.8% to December 2007. This was the first drop in a quarter since mid-2000, and the largest fall in a quarter since mid-1995.
Chief economist at Halifax Martin Ellis, said: “The housing market continued to slow in the final quarter of 2007 with prices slightly lower than in the preceding quarter. Higher mortgages repayments in response to the series of five interest rate increases between August 2006 and July 2007 and falling real earnings have put pressure on households’ income, resulting in a slowdown in both house price growth and activity in recent months.”
Despite the shock end-of-year rise most experts see 2008 as being a tough year for the property market. A fall in transactions and increasing remortgages costs will mean a year of falling prices – though probably not a crash.
Howard Archer, chief economist at Global Insight, said: “The overall evidence still clearly points to the housing market ending 2007 under mounting pressure from increased affordability pressures and tightening lending practices. However, the Halifax survey hints that house prices may prove relatively resilient over the coming months, thereby easing concerns that a sharp correction in house prices is looming.”
It is still interesting to me that there might be some people out there that do not love wi fi.
Personally, I think wi fi is the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe I am a tight wad. Maybe I just like the idea of getting something for free. But, either way I am a fan girl of wi fi.
I come on, how brilliant is it to be able to travel and know you can hook up to high speed internet access for free. Pretty well all over the developed (and even some of the developing) world.
I am not a person that needs to work in perfect silence. I actually am probably more creative when I am surrounded by hustle and bustle. So, working out of the cafe and sipped on my latte, with fire engine sirens and loud people talking on cell phones, works fine for me. But, frankly, the argument that the surroundings are a put off when it comes to wi fi is not really accurate. Because, one of the most popular wi fi locations is the library.
And, do not get me started on the benefits of using wi fi at home.
